[From Admins] Map issue -- a fix of sorts

The issue with the Google Maps is related to the change Google made on July 16th, 2018 that severely curtails the free API limits. WSPRNet will be transitioning to an alternative mapping solution as soon as possible.

In the interim I have added a new field to the User Profile form for storing your own Google Maps API Key, if you want to get back to the way things were. You can get your own API Key by following the link below and I would strongly encourage you to read the Q&A down the page.

If the setup goes smoothly you'll have an API Key that you can paste into your WSPRNet profile. (Oh yeah, and why not check the email and other info you have in there and make sure it's all good?)

The key thing to remember is that when your browser displays the map, it will use your API key for your requests and only yours. Otherwise you'll be using the default non-working one (likewise if you are not logged in).

If you share your API publicly that's your concern, but you can set up daily quotas in Google to save yourself from unexpected billing.

You can also secure the API Key by referrer which is:

** Finally, the map load will break if you set up a bad one. **

We are happy to answer questions in this forum, but we admins cannot help with the API Key sign up process in Google.
