rtlsdr_wsprd in Raspberry pi 4 without GPS pps clock

does anyone have the PI4 running rtlsdtr_wsprd (https://github.com/Guenael/rtlsdr-wsprd) sucessfully. I've tried a couple of different SDR's ( RTL-SDR Blog V3 R820T2 RTL2832U 1PPM TCXO SMA / NooElec NESDR SMArt v4 ) on my pi4 running the latest Buster release. I initially seemed to be getting regular spots but now it's just stopped working and i seem to be getting 'No Spot' all the time.. I've got the receiver connected via a good quality well shielded usb3 extension to keep it away from the pi and stop it heating. I'm using the NooElec at the moment as it has superior shielding and is also the SDR recommended by the the author of the software. I've got ntpd configured up and working with a pool of ntp servers in my country (UK). I just can't work out why it's not going after having early success with it.

I would rollback to an earlier build of raspian (Wheezy) which apparently is recommended but sadly it's not supported on the pi4 and getting a working build has proven problematic. Is there anyway to trouble shoot this further. Wondering if adding a proper GPS hat (with PPS) would help. It's an expensive gamble as the kit to do the GPS is over £50. If it does not solve the issue I'm just a bit poorer!

Anyway, hoping someone who has it running can offer some tips.
