Newbie questions - have waterfall signals but decode nothing!

Hi,

Pse bear with me, I am QRV again the first time since 18 years :)

Anyway I have put together a WSPR receiver out of an RTL8038u SDR stick modified for direct sampling, SDR#, an audio loopback virtual device driver, and WSPR-X. I get some visible traces in the waterfall display, I am on the upper side band, and my clock is no more than 1 second off. The green AF signal meter is in the green range at about 35dB.
Still WSPR-X decodes nothing.
What can the cause be?
- Does this require a more stable reference oscillator than the cheap quartz on an RTL board? Is the soft able track a drifting local oscillator?
- Signals simply too weak (well I can't believe that really. I can faintly hear some of them)?
