How Does WSPRnet Know When I'm Receiving Only?

The subject about tells it all...I've been listening (only) on 60 meters. How does WSPRnet know when I'm just listening? I'm curious more than anything. I imagine it has something to do with the fact I've checked "Upload spots".73
