The Weak Signal Propagation Reporter Network is a group of amateur radio operators using K1JT's MEPT_JT digital mode to probe radio frequency propagation conditions using very low power (QRP/QRPp) transmissions. The software is open source, and the data collected are available to the public through this site.

With correct frequency and synchronized PC clock, WSPR gets decoded from the first try!

For me it was helpful to start the old good DigiPan additionaly to WSPR (basically, any waterfal display program would suit) to see those whistles around 10.140.200, starting every even minute and two minutes long.

My MEPT with WSPR is off air from 11.00GMT today. My current MEPT on the frequency uses a simple 'G' ident.

Since yesterday, there is an German Antarctic research station "Neumayer III" active in WSPR.

According Felix, DL5XL is a member of the first wintering team on "Neumayer III" (70°41'S, 8°16'W, CQ Zone 38, ITU Zone 67, IOTA AN-016) and operate from the new station until early 2010 using his old call sign DP1POL.

I´m doing WSPR since some days and I was heard from different VK-Stations with my only 10 Watts and small GP-Antenna. I also heard VK-Stations on 40m, I never heard VK before. Very exiting! 73 de Stefan, DL4SEW

I will be back again now from 5 to 26 of March. 30m, 17m and possibly 12m.
location is IL38ar Fuerteventura northwest.

Today i start experimenting with indoor antenna and 5 Watt , on my first try i get 3 response on 40m , thats incridible ....
connecting the icom over SPDIF Interface to reduce rf noise from PC .

Has anyone tried Debian 5.0 I wonder.

I find :-

WSJT from the repository does not run - complains of python numpy errors.

WSJT / WSPR previous compiles on Debian 4.0 do not run on Debian 5.0.

WSPR does not run when compiled on Debian 5.0 - a whole catalogue of errors not previously seen.

Last night I was spotted by a station who identified as BY3AKL1X, coming from grid OM89ua, which is on the coast of mainland China, near Tianjin.

I'm not sure what to make out of the callsign though (although I admit to not knowing much about Chinese callsigns). Is this a U.S. call (KL1X?) operating in China?

2/16/09Z I see stations all over on the map and i was heard by WB2YUN out in the Pacific. Also other stations around the states. However, i am not hearing nor seeing any stations on the screen. I know the radio is working because i see RTTY signals on there but not one, Not one WSPR station. Arizona is truly in the sink hole for propagation.

Just put up a new antenna. I made it for a Field Day contest for portable operation. It's up in the trees at my place for testing and tweaking. It's a vee beam. Legs are cut for one wavelength at 40 metres. I made it after reading several websites, and settled on the document by ZS1AN at

This wire antenna is fed with several metres of twin feed, a 4:1 air wound balun, then coax to the tuner. At the moment, SWR measurements are a bit high (as high as 4.0:1 in some places) but that should be fixed when I do the final tweaking.

This antenna works on multi bands. It's not better than my YAGI on 10,15,20, but it's a darn good antenna for good results in a portable situation.

the beam is pointing sort of towards Europe (the included angle is about 90 degrees, so the beam is not narrow). I'm using it tonight for WSPR.

UPDATE Feb 26, 2009

I've added a couple of additional features to the QRP WSPR transmitter.

1. Completed the switched attenuator so that I can send at 23 dBM, 17 dBm and 10 dBm under control of the PIC.
2. Added GPS support (see below)

I use the GPS to get time of day information and also an accurate 1 pulse per second clock. This is used to update the time of day and to calibrate the symbol clock for WSPR (generated from the internal soft clock generated from the 32.768 Khz (nominal) crystal.

Being paranoid, I also added a thermal fuse to my "oven" so that power to the heater is removed (permanently!!) if the temperature inside the enclosure gets to 72C.

I got the TX on the air just after sunset local time today so missed the bulk of the day's propagation - that said, my first spot was from WA2YUN!

Look forward to getting spots - especially at the lower power levels!


With thanks to Gene W3PM and indirectly to Johan SM6LKM, I am now on the air with a homebrew WSPR transmitter running 0.5 watts (antenna = 160m inverted L with remote tuner) on 30m.

Just prior to 11.00Z my Multimode MEPT was off air for a few minutes for an Antenna change from the 6m Vertical whip to the low, sloping 10MHz 1/2Wave Dipole.
